What Happens to the Human Soul After Death?
The question of what happens to the human soul after death is one of the oldest and most profound questions of mankind. Across many cultures and centuries, people have speculated, debated, and sought spiritual or scientific explanations for the fate of the soul - consciousness - when a person dies. For a long time, it was thought that the soul - or consciousness - resides in the brain or is created by it. So the question is, what happens to the soul after the brain dies?
However, a growing view in philosophy and metaphysics holds that the soul is not contained in the brain or created there. Instead, modern psychology is moving toward the view that the soul—consciousness—is not contained in the brain it creates, but has always been present in the universe. According to this view, the human brain is not the source of consciousness but merely a receiving device—a specially created instrument to receive a particular soul already present in the universe, much as a television receives, interprets and displays signals sent from a distant broadcasting tower.
When the body ceases to function, when death occurs, the “receiving machine (brain)” is destroyed. The brain can no longer receive and interpret the soul, but that original soul still exists in the universe. It does not disappear or dissolve; instead, it exists beyond the limits of space and time, waiting for another vessel, a human body, to receive it when conditions permit, such as at the moment of conception. Therefore, the soul does not disappear when a person dies, but is part of a continuous, eternal process in which the soul circulates through different bodies, temporarily received in one body but still existing in the universe after death.
This view is in contrast to the conventional materialist view that death is the end of the soul, of consciousness. Instead, it proposes a vision of the soul as an eternal, non-local entity independent of the physical body - it is available and continuously present in the universe, waiting for the opportunity to create a new life, a new person.
The soul or consciousness is not a product of the brain, nor is it contained in the brain; instead, it is continuously present in the universe, existing before a person is born and continuing to exist after that person dies.
